CHIEF OF DEFENCE FORCES STATEMENT
Since its establishment in 1977, the Seychelles Defence Forces (SDF) has evolved into a modern, cohesive, and professionally driven force. As a critical pillar of national security, the SDF plays an indispensable role in safeguarding the sovereignty of the Republic of Seychelles, while also standing at the frontline against illicit and illegal activities in our maritime domain and the wider region.
Our soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Special Forces have consistently risen to the challenge with courage, discipline, and unwavering commitment. Their professionalism, resilience, and esprit de corps are a source of pride and inspiration—particularly for the new generation of Seychellois joining our ranks. The SDF today reflects a dynamic, youthful force, deeply committed to the nation’s service and prepared to confront both traditional and emerging threats.
The profession of arms is unique in its demand for selflessness, integrity, and national devotion. In choosing to serve, our men and women demonstrate a profound commitment that transcends personal interest. There is no parallel to the sense of duty, pride, and sacrifice inherent in military service—qualities that continue to define the SDF as it adapts to modern defence and security demands.
Our strategic location in the Indian Ocean places Seychelles at the heart of regional maritime security. The scourge of piracy and other transnational threats has underscored the importance of a capable and agile force. The Seychelles Coast Guard and Air Force has distinguished themselves in numerous operations—protecting our economic lifelines, defending our territorial waters, and ensuring the safety of our fishermen and maritime community. Despite limited resources, their professionalism and determination have delivered results that command respect at home and abroad.
Our elite Special Forces have also played a vital role, successfully conducting high-risk operations to reclaim vessels, rescue hostages, and neutralize threats—restoring hope and dignity to our people in moments of crisis.
We are deeply grateful for the enduring support of our international partners. Training opportunities, operational assistance, and strategic cooperation have greatly enhanced our capabilities and fortified our readiness.
Today, the SDF stands ready—not only to defend our land, sea, and skies, but to be a key player in ensuring peace and stability in our region. To the youth of Seychelles: the call to serve is a call to something greater than oneself. Whether it’s flying, sailing, or operating in elite units, joining the Defence Forces offers unmatched purpose, challenge, and honour.
